Veneers are strong, thin, custom-made porcelain shells that attach directly to teeth. They are used to treat gaps in teeth, cover discolored teeth, reshape teeth or correct teeth that are out of alignment.
Careful evaluation of existing tooth structure and a clear understanding of the desired result are of the utmost importance. Most veneers require minimal preparation; however, an anesthetic may be used. The teeth are cleaned and a small amount of enamel is removed from the front of the tooth to accommodate the thickness of the veneer.
Depending on the amount of reshaping of tooth structure, acrylic temporaries may be placed. Our laboratory sends us the porcelain veneers in about two weeks. Before adhering the veneers, we check the color, shape and size to assure they are correct; then the teeth are cleaned and rinsed and the veneers are bonded to the teeth with a light-cured resin material. Finally, any minor adjustments are completed and the teeth are polished.
