When a tooth is fractured, severely damaged by decay, or has a large old filling, a crown (also called a cap) is usually placed. A crown strengthens the tooth, protects the remaining tooth structure, and can improve appearance.
Treatment begins by preparing a tooth to accept a crown. Severely broken down teeth may require a rebuilding step to provide an adequate base for the crown. After reshaping is complete, an impression of the prepared tooth is made, and a temporary crown is made to protect the tooth until the "permanent" crown is ready. In about two weeks your crown arrives and is bonded to the tooth.
A bridge is a replacement tooth that is supported and attached by a crown on either side of the space. The two side teeth (anchor teeth) are prepared to provide support for the bridge.
