A sealant is a plastic resin material that is usually applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth- premolars and molars. The depressions and grooves (pits and fissures) of the chewing surfaces of back teeth are extremely difficult to keep clean and they are the most common area for decay to enter the tooth.
The sealant protects the area from plaque (bacteria) and acids. Sealants are usually done for children; however, it is also a very effective preventive step for adults. The procedure does not require anesthesia and takes only a few minutes. Sealants usually last several years before a reapplication is needed. During your regular dental visits, we will check the condition of any sealants and reapply them when necessary.
